A Politician with Integrity!

13 06 2008 - 09:06

“I care more about this issue than my job,” says David Davis in an interview with Nick Robinson. Hence, he has resigned from the Commons. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the Government’s victory in Wednesday’s vote on pre-charge detention of up to 42 days, but he is concerned generally with a variety of measures which seem to be encroaching on our freedoms and liberties. In the interview with Nick Robinson he cites, for example: DNA databases, Identity Cards, the proliferation of CCTV amongst other things.

Grumpy Brian has told me many times that he doesn’t trust any politician. He is convinced that they’re all in it for themselves and that they will lie to, manipulate and mislead the public in any way they can in order to further their won personal or party interests. I try to be more optimistic, though often it does seem as though he has a point.

Finally we seem to have a politician in David Davis who is willing to put aside his own interests and his own career path and stand up (or, in fact, stand down) for what he believes in. Whether or not what he has done is the most effective way of tackling the problem I share his concerns and I applaud his actions.
