My favourite walk

25 05 2008 - 13:40

start of Gallowflat walkTime for me to tell you about my favourite walk – and the one I do most often. It is called Gallowflat and is not far from here- a few minutes in the car along the road past St Madoes. It is where my friend Bethan and her human Jimmy (my former teacher) live. My friend from church, Mary, also lives there.

Max with tongue curled I always enjoy meeting them. There was no sign of them today though when I went out with Hilary. Gallowflat is basically farmland with four cottages . We park near the now-disused farm buildings, go past Bethan’s house, and then down a lovely track where I can be let off lead to catch rabbits! (yes that is where I caught the rabbit the other day for my breakfast)

the strange farm thing It is usually deserted with just rabbits, birds and deer around, but today there were tractors and other farm machinery working in the fields. I was very well behaved and stayed near Hilary and I think she was impressed with me. I was a bit unsure of some of the machines and equipment as they looked rather dangerous!

on Gallowflat walkWe go past a field my humans call smelly field, as it used to be a landfill site and still lets off smelly gasses. I like playing there. A bit further down is Cow Field. There used to be cows there but they moved ages ago so it is just a big empty field now. After that we pass the water towers. Today there was a bit of farm machinery beside them.

the fields at Gallowflat We then go down a wee slope and continue down the path towards the river Tay. There are fields on each side which used to be very waterlogged – almost like a lake. But last year new drainage was put in to channel the water into the drainage stream.

Mmm... smelly water! It has worked very well and the fields are looking good. Sometimes I run over them to chase rabbits! In the distance in the photos you can see the Fife hills! The drainage ditch is wonderful as it is full of rather smelly stagnant water that tastes delicious. It is also lovely and cooling on a hot day.

me thinking of going into the drainage ditch This is me having a look at the water and deciding to cool off later on the return walk. We keep going down the path which bends to the left. The path ends up in the woods at the bottom. You can catch a glimpse of the river and the marshy area through the trees.

where the deer was.... We turn left here and go along the wooded path. There are lots of deer in the woods and we see them most times. Today we saw a deer and I ran after it. Hilary tried to take a photo of the deer but was to slow. This photo shows where the deer was!!!

where is Hilary? At the end of the walk the path seems to disappear into the woods so my humans call this the turning circle and we just turn and go back again. Sometimes I have gone off into the woods and my humans start the return journey without me! That happened today and I got all confused when I came back to path trying to see Hilary. Luckily I spotted her and came bounding up to her before she got lost.

coming out of the water We walk back up the same way and today I went into the water at the end of the drainage channel to cool off. It is quite steep going up and down the bank. My humans are too scared to go into the water so I always make sure I share some with them by shaking myself near them afterwards so they can be refreshed too. I am really a caring sharing dog.
