Born: Hull, Yorkshire
DOB: 26.09.1963
Location: Perthshire, Scotland
Occupation: Priest in Scottish Episcopal Church (Anglican)
I live in rural Perthshire with my wife Hilary. My two children (from my first marriage, who are now grown up, visit from time to time. I a Priest in a small village congregation and also spend quite a lot of time working, on a voluntary basis, as a counsellor at an agency in Dunfermline.
I grew up in a small village in the the Isle of Axholme in England, called Westwoodside. I went to University, as a mature student, in Aberdeen and studied theology. I have an urge to do something useful and constructive with my life – and to make difference. I struggle sometimes with the church and the fact that I am a priest in it. In particular, the thought that people might think that I represent or endorse some of the more unpleasant and intolerant views, expressed sometimes in the wider church fills me with horror. I also find it difficult that so many people unconnected with the church seem to have a strong, negative and emotive response to the church and its ministers. I am aware that many people both in the church and outside have somewhat preconceived, and rather negative, notions of what a priest should be like. I hope I don’t fulfil any of them!
I love being around people – I’m definitely an extrovert, though possibly, at times a rather shy one. I prefer uncertainty to certainty and fluidity and change to stability and sameness! I’m good at seeing the big picture, but not very good at fine detail, which bores me quickly!
